Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior interview with Homecooked Games

Do you remember our gory review of a game called Stick Fight? …ok, maybe our review wasn’t all that gory, but the game can be, depending on the settings you choose to play the game with… Anyway, today we would like to share our interview with Homecooked Games the developer of Stick Fight!

If you have yet to check out our review of Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior, you can do so here!

Before we start we’d like to thank the Homecooked Games Team for participating in our interview and for answering all of our geeky questions! Thanks Guys!

…and without further ado, our interview begins…

The Interview

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior! Could you kick-start this interview by telling us a little about your studio, yourself, and what drew you into the gaming industry?

Gaming has been a huge part of my life since my childhood. When you watch a movie or read a book you dive into a completely different universe some people created and it is really awesome. With games you can do the same thing but with a huge difference; You get to control things in that universe, therefore you are a part of it!

I was really amazed by games and it didn’t take much time for me to want to create one. I started making small games before college and kept going after college. Before Homecooked Games, I worked for some gaming companies and did freelance work for a while, but then we made our first Stick Fight game with 2 of my friends and everything changed for me.

3 years after of the release of our very first Stick Fight game, I left my job and started Homecooked Games with my wife, Inanc.

Ok, let’s start talking about Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior… What are the highlights of your latest release?

It’s a fast-paced stickman action game with very easy controls. But still, it has its complexities, like making coin combos, unlocking and fighting with bosses to earn new belts. There are also many cosmetic items to try out!

What was the core idea or inspiration behind Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior? And perhaps more importantly, where do you find inspiration for your games in general?

I was a fan of the flash stickman games when I was a kid. When we decided to make a mobile game we didn’t have an idea at first. It is quite funny actually. We didn’t have the artistic ability to create more detailed characters so we said, why not make a stickman game? We wanted the controls to be very simple, so we implemented the 2-tap fighting mechanic.

I can say that I get inspired by my experiences. I know what I want from games, and while playing other games I always look for what makes that game good, what can be made to improve it. And those thoughts pile up, eventually leading me to come up with a new game idea.

How long was Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior in development for? And are there any interesting and/or exciting moments or experiences you would like to share with us from that time?

It took 5 months from start to finish.

It was actually very interesting for us because it was the first game we worked on with Inanc. We decided to create every asset in the game ourselves (except the sound). I am a computer engineer and Inanc is a sociologist. We both didn’t really have any experience creating art. We learned through the process and did many, many iterations to make the game look good. I remember canceling up to a week worth of work and starting from scratch a couple of times. I think the key is not giving up.

What software, developer-tools, or black-magic(?) did you use when making Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior? Is there anything you would like to share with the developers who read Edamame Reviews?

We used Unity3D engine to develop the game. Unity has really improved their 2D tools in the past few years and the cross-platform build support makes the deployment process a breeze.

We used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to create our sprites, and Esoteric Software’s Spine for the animations. Oh, and I was worried about the audio of the game, but Fmod’s sound library was a great asset and we ended up picking all of our audio from there.

Is there any secret “developer-advice” you can give our lucky players who read this interview?

If you haven’t realized yet, the bosses have their patterns and they don’t change. And the key to defeating bosses is being calm and focused. Just stop if you are in a losing streak.

What can we expect to see in Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior or from Homecooked Games in the not so distant future? What do we have to look forward to next?

We are working on an update right now which will include 40-50 new items, and we will make a ranking reset after that. We have other things coming but let’s keep it secret for now 😉

Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to our awesome team of Writers, Developers, and Patrons who keep Edamame Reviews up and running?

To be honest I wasn’t familiar with Edamame Reviews before getting in touch with you. When I checked it out I was pleasantly surprised by the original and spot-on reviews.

So keep up the good work! And thank you for picking us for this interview!
