About a year ago, PlaySide released a game that is to this day our “second favorite” game from their studio. Our favorite is Icy Ropes! Today we would like to share our review of Fishy Bits 2, a game that attempts to best its awesome predecessor!

Unlike the original Fishy Bits which was a sideways scrolling runner swimmer game, Fishy Bits 2 is set in an open expanse of clear-blue ocean, filled with colossal sized predators! …and, just like last time, your mission in this game is to not only survive but to also grow bigger and bigger until eventually, you become the predator!

Now, in theory, this is great. The game is played using a simple (Touch and Drag) based control system which allows you to speedily change the direction in which your blocky pixelated fish swims in search of food and to avoid getting eaten yourself… You really shouldn’t have much to complain about, if there was only enough food!

You see, in order to survive in this game, you must continually eat. If you stop eating for too long your fish will starve and die. Although manageable while you are still the size of a goldfish,  the bigger you get, the more food you require to survive and so, more often than not we ended up dying due to starvation… Not the most exciting way to die.

To be fair, there are a number of upgrades you can make to your fish in order to make hunting easier. As you slowly gather the coins required to perform these upgrades the game will likely become easier and easier to play, transforming it more into the hunting game we were first expecting.

All this being said, however, for new payers playing this game for the first time, we can’t help but wonder whether the reward at the end is enough to keep people playing…

If you are interested in giving Fishy Bits 2 a try, you can expect to be greeted by super cute blocky arcade-style 3D graphics, pitch-perfect sound effects, and a moderate number of ads. Everything you would expect to find in a high-end mobile game.

The Conclusion

If you’re after a deep sea survival game that “should” eventually transform into a hunting game, this is the game for you.

…beware starvation…
