Interview with Devm Games, the developer of Silly Sailing

Are you enjoying yourself as you leisurely sail your way around small uninhabited islands on your oversized shoe/boat? 👞 or ⛵️ If so, today we would like to share our super quick interview with the developer of Silly Sailing, probably the only game on the planet where sailing 2 oversized bananas is considered normal…

If you have yet to check out our review of Silly Sailing, you can do so here!

Before we start we’d like to thank the Devm Games Team for participating in our interview and for answering all of our geeky questions! Thanks Guys!

…and without further ado, our interview begins…

The Interview

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about Silly Sailing, could you kick-start this interview by telling us a little about your studio and what drew you to Game Development?

So Devm Games is a solo indie studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. I started doing my own games in early 2009, but I had worked in the games industry with a couple of other developers before that.

First question. What was the core idea (or inspiration) that sparked the development of Silly Sailing?

I like doing games about different types of vehicles and finding ways to make gameplay about that particular vehicle’s features. So I wanted to make a game where you did not only have to think about steering but also how to align your sail relative to the wind direction.

What were the hardest problems you faced during the different development stages of Silly Sailing?

The controls probably, I went through a couple of different variants but the game is still not super intuitive for all players.

For our nerdy Developer Fans, what programming language and or software did you use when developing Silly Sailing? And was it a good decision?

I’m using Unity with C#, and CG/HLSL for shaders. There are also some bash scripts for minor utility things.
Unity is a really good engine, and also an engine I’m comfortable with which is also an important factor.

What advice would you give to a new player trying Silly Sailing for the first time?

Maybe spend some time in the free sailing mode to practice the controls and wind tactics.

Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

All over the place, other games, movies, etc.

A few words to Silly Sailing fans on Edamame Reviews. Any new games in the near future? What can we look forward to next?

I’m putting the finishing touches to Cubor (, a puzzle game which is coming out on the15th of February. After that, I’m working on a bigger project which I’ve been working on for a long time, but the release of that is pretty far into the future.

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.

A really solid review site with good and honest reviews.
