Our interview with Rockhead Games the developers of Starlit On Wheels!

As some of you may remember, one of the first reviews we ever conducted on Edamame Reviews was actually with Rockhead Games the creators of the mega cute “Starlit” series for iOS and Android – so our interview here today is both a recap and closer look into how Starlit On Wheels was developed.

If you have yet to check out our review of Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart, you can do so here!

Before we start we’d like to thank the Rockhead Games Team for participating in our interview and for answering all of our geeky questions! Thanks!

…and without further ado, our interview begins…

The Interview

/// Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart! Could you kick-start this interview by telling us a little about your studio, yourself, and what drew you into the gaming industry?

Hello, I’m Fernando D’Andrea from Rockhead Studios. We’re the people behind Starlit Adventures, and now we’ve launched Starlit On Wheels as another game featuring Bo & Kikki and the same universe. Rockhead Studios started in 2010, but Christian (Rockhead’s co-founder) and I have been in the gaming industry far longer, since 1996! We were drawn to this industry because of the passion for games we’ve had since our childhood.

/// Ok, let’s start talking about Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart. What are the highlights of your latest release?

We like to think that Starlit On Wheels is a racing game gone Starlit, instead of Starlit going “racing game”. It’s a racing game at its core with some of the elements that make Starlit Adventures unique added to it: an indeed “classic” experience of the genre, but also one where you pick the bits and parts, changing the way you play. The greatest highlight, although is this: you can make your own tracks.

/// What was the core idea or inspiration behind Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart? And perhaps more importantly, where do you find inspiration for your games in general?

We always try to create a console-quality experience in the mobile devices, and we make no secret we’re greatly inspired by games we played when we were kids (and it’s easy to notice this includes Nintendo games). But we also always stop and think: what can we add to it to make it unique?

Starlit On Wheels followed all these steps. It’s not a game designed for consoles then ported to mobile devices. It sure looks a lot like Mario Kart but feels a lot different when you get used to it, and that’s something you feel when you try to go back. We’ve put a lot of attention to the physics of the karts. And the track builder players get within the game is the very same editor we use to create the game’s built-in tracks ourselves!

/// How long was Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart in development for? And are there any interesting and/or exciting moments or experiences you would like to share with us from that time?

We began the development of Starlit On Wheels well before Starlit Archery Club was even ready to launch. It’s been in the making since early 2017, about two years now. Its team has changed sizes, thus, and the game is still in full development even as it’s been already launched, as we keep adding new content to it and we’re taking the feedback of the players into account.

/// What software, developer-tools, or black-magic(?) did you use when making Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart? Is there anything you would like to share with the developers who read Edamame Reviews?

We use Unity 3D and our artists use a lot of Blender. Blender is becoming an interesting and very professional piece of software!

/// Is there any secret “developer-advice” you can give our lucky players who read this interview?

Learn how to drift. Drift is the key! And join the online cups to improve your car faster.

/// What can we expect to see in Starlit On Wheels: Super Kart or from Rockhead Games in the not so distant future? What do we have to look forward to next?

We’re about to launch a super update to Starlit On Wheels next August with lots of new stuff, including some new car categories and items to customize them.

/// Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to our awesome team of Writers, Developers, and Supporters who keep Edamame Reviews up and running?

With such a huge quantity of stuff floating around in app stores and with such a hard time getting any visibility, you’re the one helping players to find the truly relevant ones that’ll match them. Thanks!
