Interview with the Oby’s Farm Team, the creators of Oby’s Barrel Travel

Do you enjoy playing games that would be just a little ridiculous if it were set in real life? We do, and so today we’ve got something a little special. Today we’d like to share with you our mini-interview with the developers of Oby’s Barrel Travel. One of the most ridiculous yet fun games we’ve featured all week!

Check out our original review of Oby’s Barrel Travel here!

Before we start, we’d like to thank the Oby’s Farm Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time answering our questions. Thanks guys!

Now without any further ado, our interview begins.

So, how long have you made Apps or Games for?

Oby’s Farm consists of two brothers Aron and Adrian, and a friend, Daniel. We started to make games about two years ago. Actually, we did some attempts some 15 years ago but with no commercial ambitions. After a lot of years with different creative careers, we once again realized how games can combine all our creative expressions in one single product.

How many Apps or Games have you made?

Oby’s Barrel Travel is our first released game. We have a couple of other games that are under development but along the way, we realized these early projects were a little too ambitious so they are currently put on hold. We decided to make a simple, yet addictive, game to actually get something done. The result is Oby’s Barrel Travel and we’re very pleased with the result!

Ok, so what do you use to make your apps or games?

We use our own game engine that is written mostly in C++ but also some Objective-C and Java for platform specific code. The reason we use our own engine is because we believe it is a great learning experience, gives us more flexibility and we are also having great fun doing it.

In our early (unreleased) projects, we worked in 2D. For Oby’s Barrel Travel we wanted to try out to make something with 3D graphics. The models are made with Blender 3D and the textures with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The music is made with Renoise, Logic, hardware synthesizers and samples.

The reason we’ve used Renoise is the specific feeling you get from tracking in contrast to usual sequencers. We’ve all grown up with the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and love that sound. We do not make retro games but we still want a touch of that feeling.

Ok, so tell us about Oby’s Barrel Travel!

We wanted to make a simple and highly addictive game that is easy to learn, but where you can always improve your skills.

In Oby’s Barrel Travel, the mission is to get the piglet Oby as high as possible by jumping from barrel to barrel. We wanted to make this game very slim. No in-app purchases, no collecting. Just focus on a simple concept and make it something you can just pick up anytime and play for a minute (or two, or five, or ten).

Awesome🙂 Thank you for the wonderful interview.
