Interview with the Dollar Beach team the creators of Save The Line

Save The Line was an incredible game to play. Honestly, we’re still a little baffled at how a game with such a simple concept can be so difficult…

Today we’d like to share with you our interview with the team that somehow made it all possible, The Dollar Beach Team.

Before we start, I’d like to thank the whole Dollar Beach Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time in answering our questions. Thank you very much guys.

Now without any further ado our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Save The Line?

We usually make endless based games, where you try to last as long as possible, like our other games Dodgy Gods (previously called Look Out!) and Ice Hop, but we wanted to try something different, so we came up with a level based game where we could update it to keep players engaged.

Cool, a venture into a new field of gaming. So what programming language and or software did you use when making Save The Line?

We used YoYo Games- GameMaker Studio. We have a quite close relationship with the guys at YoYo. They have developed a very light game development engine which we have been using for years. We have on occasion used Unity for 3D projects because it can’t be beaten on that but for 2D we like to stick with GameMaker.

Ok, here is a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Save The Line?

Save the Line was pretty much our simplest project. The art took Rocky a few hours and the levels are easily coded. Ironically we spent months and months developing Dodgy Gods (previously called Look Out!) with art being done by legendary pixel artist Gary J Lucken of Army of Trolls, but within 2 days we have already surpassed in downloads the amount we received on Dodgy Gods. To be honest, the hardest part is post-production, having to negotiate eCPM’s with ad networks to get the most amount of money possible from the game.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

We luckily have a very talented team with many years of experience, we drive our inspiration from simple games of the past where there was very little input in controlling the games; due to mobile phones only allowing inputs of simple taps or swipes similar to the old atari games where you have one button and a joystick.

A few words to Save The Line fans on Edamame Reviews.

We have already started work on new levels to keep the players hooked; although a lot of them are seriously challenging, we may attempt to throw in a few slightly easier levels, haha. We will also be continuing to bring out simple but addictive games under Dollar Beach. We have a whole host of games in pre and post development, ready to be released all the way up to August, so keep an eye out for Dollar Beach games!

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.

Very efficient and great team. It was a pleasure to talk to you and hope to keep a strong relationship between ourselves. We will keep you in touch with any future games and if you want to learn any more about ourselves and our history. I can promise you, it is quite an interesting one.
