Interview with Simeon Reymond and Takuma Takahashi the creators of Dual Blast

Making an arcade machine out of a smartphone or tablet “should” be easy. Seriously, looking from a purely hardware perspective, the tech in the smartphone or computer you’re reading this article on is far superior to any arcade game you or parents played on – depending on how old you are😉.

So why is it that we don’t see millions of old arcade style games flooding the App Stores? Probably the biggest reason for this is that arcade games are built to be played with joysticks and a bunch of oversized buttons…

For mobile developers it’s a constant struggle to figure out how to make controlling your player easier on the flat glass touch screen of your device.

The Game Attack Team with their brilliantly designed game Dual Blast may have figured out the secret of making fantastic arcade style games on mobile devices…!

Before we start, we’d like to thank both Simeon Reymond and Takuma Takahashi for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time in answering our questions. Thank you very much guys.

Now without any further ado our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Dual Blast?

While developing Ninja Tower in a 4 man team, we realised that our programmer and our CG artist were more busy than us.  So we, Simeon Reymond (2d Graphic Design)  and Takuma Takahashi (Sound Design) decided that in addition to Ninja Tower we would develop smaller games. We both like vs fighting games and face each other during breaks at street fighter and marvel vs capcom. Since a good adaption of fighting game is almost impossible for mobile devices, we thought we would bring the fighting spirit to another genre.

Sounds awesome! So what programming language and or software did you use when making Dual Blast?

C # and Unity. Very original, isn’t it ?

Well, you’re right about the “originality😁”. Here’s a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Dual Blast?

The hardest thing was to learn C# from scratch and learn to be patient. The balancing of the different weapons was much more difficult than we expected. But we are happy that we could achieve different levels of weapons and combos.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

For this particular project we looked at games like « Viewpoint » and « R-type » and also «Street Fighter 4 » where you can have different levels of « focus attack ». Moreover we were inspired by old arcade tables. Basically we really wanted to use the iPhone as one of those old machines where 2 people were facing each other and yelling.
