Interview with Fernando Peña D’Andrea the creator of Starlit Adventures

Starlit Adventures is simply amazing. The quality of this game feels almost out of place on the screen of a smartphone.

This time, we’d like to share with you our interview with the equally amazing developers who made this game a reality. Rockhead Games has been making games for the past twenty years and have made an amazing leap, overtaking what we ever expected from a smartphone game.

Before we start, I’d like to thank the Rockhead Team for participating in this interview, and would also like to give special thanks to Fernando for spending some of his valuable time in answering our questions. Thank you very much.

Now, without any further ado, here is our interview with Fernando Peña D’Andrea and the creators of Starlit Adventures.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Starlit Adventures?

We’ve been making games for almost twenty years. A few years back, we were pushed into this new environment of mobile and tablet games, and it was a one of a kind shift of paradigms for us. We released some games for touch devices, but we were still to make something that we felt had both nice characters for players to relate to and an old school, console-like experience on mobile. We wanted to make players feel skilled. That was a challenge we’ve set for ourselves.

Awesome, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Starlit Adventures?

We used Unity 3D to make Starlit Adventures. It’s quick to get things started,  allows us to develop for all key platforms and grants us a lot of freedom. It’s based on C#, which is a very nice language to work with.

Ok, here is a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Starlit Adventures?

The hardest thing was to deal with a lot of version changes, as we had quite a long development process. Over two years, we had to deal with updates on Unity, updates on Facebook APIs, and the requirement for a 64-bit build from Apple, among other things.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

Mainly from our childhood and the games we used to play. Those who play Starlit Adventures will notice the references. There’s some Bomberman, some Boulder Dash, a bit of Nintendo games and even some more obscure titles that I don’t really think many people have ever played. We’re veterans, and our childhood has got pretty far away by now. 🙂

A few words to Starlit Adventures fans on Edamame Reviews.

We really hope you all can enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed making it.

We have no plans for new games right now, but we’re totally involved in creating more content for Starlit Adventures. There’s already a new version with more challenges out right now, and more should come really soon.

So, no plans right now for new games, but you should expect to see Bo & Kikky again in the future.

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.

When we found the review Edamame made of Starlit Adventures, I remember reading it out loud for the rest of the team and we were blown away. We felt we had something unique in our hands but that’s our opinion about our brainchild. Seeing details we cared about noticed in such an attentive way and expressed with such nice words was awesome.

Not to mention that a channel such as yours is so important for independant developers out there!

Also, we were pretty amused to see Kikki the Starlit being described as a “mega mole”. 🙂
