Interview with the Oops! Team, The creators of Ascending Pinball

Do you just have this thing for Minimalist Games? If so, today we’ve got a game and an interview that is bound to get you excited! If you’d like to kickstart your new year with an awesome new game + an intriguing developer interview you’ve come to the right place.

If you’d like to check out our review of Ascending Pinball, you can do that here.

Before we start, we’d like to thank the Oops! Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time answering our questions. Thanks guys!

Now without any further ado, our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Ascending Pinball?

We do brainstorming pretty frequently. We just sit down and throw on the table everything that comes to mind. When we get to an interesting idea we try to polish it and see if it becomes our next game. Ascending Pinball turned out to be one of the chosen ones. We have a sack full of ideas! 😃

Why did you decide to use “Minimalist Graphics” when making Ascending Pinball?
By the way, the graphics in Ascending Pinball look amazing! Nice job! 😉

It looked like it asked for it. We tried to build a casual experience and a minimalist style seemed the right choice. It fits with the gameplay and with the general idea for the game.

Was Ascending Pinball a minimalist game from the beginning? Or did it turn out that way over time?

It was conceived like a simple and minimalist game from the beginning.  As a matter of fact, gameplay was even simpler than it is now. We include several features during the development that were not present at the start of the process.

Now for some geeky questions. What programming language and or software did you use when making Ascending Pinball?

We use Unity game engine and the code is written in C#. Unity is an exceptional weapon of choice for game development. It is powerful, flexible, and you can deploy the product with ease to several platforms in no time. It just works and it lets you create whatever you want. If you can imagine it you can build it with Unity.

Ok, here is a difficult question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Ascending Pinball?

There are always bugs crawling around and everything turns out to be a little more complicated than you would have thought at first. No game is little in terms of development, there are always a lot of challenges to overcome along the way. In Ascending Pinball the hardest thing to achieve was to tune the difficulty level while keeping it playable and fun.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

Actually, everything is a source of inspiration! Board games, toys, other video games…the other day I was staring at a banana and I thought – “Look at that! It could be a great swinging platform“.  A powerful source of inspiration for us is the 8-bit video game era. We started playing video games at that time and we have a lot of sweet gaming memories from back then. The first time I turned on my Atari 2600 and played Combat was just amazing!
