Interview with ALMA Games, the developers of Roller Quad

Are you in need of an ultra simple phisics based puzzle game with a gameplay system that will first shock you with its simplicity, and then shock you again with its brutal difficulty!? Well, you’ve “sort of” come to the right place.

Today we would like to share with you our interview with the ALMA Games Team, the developers of Roller Quad. Check out our review here.

Before we start, we’d like to thank the ALMA Games Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time answering our questions. Thanks guys!

Now without any further ado, our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Roller Quad?’

I have been creating games since 2010. Physical puzzles and developing games for children are my main direction. Earlier I had been developing the games on Flash for websites. The ALMA Games followers are lovers of brain games, there are even schools and tutors among them which added these games to the learning process. I like to work in this sphere, but at the same time, I always want to try something new. Once, during a break between existing projects, I decided to make a new game for mobile platforms. The main goal was – a quick game in a minimal style. I chose my old game “Sweetland” as a prototype and started to work.

Can you tell us a little about how the visuals were made in Roller Quad?’

Stylish and simple, was the reason for Roller Quad.
The premier version of the game included only simple figures, mostly with sharp corners. Later, when I found a publisher, we decided to make some art changes: smooth corners and make it more elegantly styled. But the sharp corners of the earth were left from the original version because it builds the gameplay.

What advice would you give a new player trying Roller Quad for the first time?

Rotate the world, keep balanced and do not rush!
The quick moves or speed enhancing could lead to the fall.
Think about your actions beforehand and keep calm 😃
Guys, don’t crush your phone 😉

Ok, now for some geeky questions.
What programming language and or software did you use when making Roller Quad?

The game is written in c #. I used Unity for development, all assets I created in Adobe Flash.
The music and sounds for Roller Quad I purchased on the royalty free music sites.

Here is a difficult question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Roller Quad?

Since this is not my first game, there were no special problems in development. Unity is an excellent engine for writing games. All development process took about 3 weeks. And 1 week for completion of the art and the embedding of frameworks.
In my opinion, making a game is easier than marketing it 😃

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

I play the games on different platforms and also travel a lot. Try to be creative. And my best ideas are born from a good mood 😃
